Kiss Me, Kate Featured Actress Shannon-Courtney Porper
Here’s a unique factoid about Kiss Me, Kate: 11 of the show’s 16 actors are making their TheatreWorks debut. And we are always happy to have new blood.
Another distinction about the production? It boasts the off-stage husband and wife team of Jeff and Shannon-Courtney Porper. They portray a gangster and the dual roles of Lois Lane/Bianca, respectively. The Porpers come to TheatreWorks from way down south – Ridgefield.
Shannon was most recently seen in the leading role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at Musicals at Richter in Danbury. Performing since the age of 3, Shannon has performed in CT, NY, and on stages throughout the world.
In “real life” Shannon is a K-8 drama and dance teacher at Ross Woodward Magnet School in New Haven. She has the honor off teaching at several dance studios in the area and is also a professional choreographer. This month, she will be reprising her role as Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show at The Playhouse on the Green in Bridgeport as well as serving as Associate Choreographer.
“In the Spotlight” spoke with Shannon to ask her about her TheatreWorks debut and her experiences on Kiss Me, Kate.
I.T.S. What is most challenging about your role in Kiss Me, Kate?
S-C.P: Channeling my inner Marilyn Monroe or Veronica Lake. Being sexy and not “cute” is most difficult as I'm not used to playing these roles. But it’s so much fun to play the vixen.
I.T.S. What is your favorite role and/or show? And what role are you dying to do (in any show)?
S-C.P: My dream role was playing Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, which I was lucky enough to do this summer…and to be directed by Brad Blake. It was amazing! As far as a role in the future? I am dying to play Maureen in the musical Rent.
I.T.S. What do you think audiences will enjoy most about Kiss Me, Kate?
S-C.P: The music and the humor. There is definitely something for everyone.
Well, there you have it. One half of the Porper team is having a great time and we know you will, too. So come on down (or up as the case may be) and catch TheatreWorks’ all-star production of the musical chestnut, Kiss Me, Kate!

The page-to-stage staged reading series has a Halloween treat sure to keep you on the edge of your seats!
Misery is a roller coaster ride into the darkness and torment of obsession. Expect the unexpected in this compellingly cruel thriller. After an auto accident, best-selling romance novelist, Paul Sheldon, is lucky to be alive. Or is he? This stunning stage adaptation of Stephen King's masterpiece will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The story is well-known for its 1990 screen version starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, which garnered Ms. Bates an Academy Award for her role as Mr. Sheldon’s “Number 1 Fan,” Annie Wilkes.
