Kiss Me, Kate Featured Actress
Priscilla Squiers
Where do we begin when talking about Priscilla? We’re so fortunate to have her grace our stage (again) in the roles of Lilli Vanessi and “Kate” in our current production of Kiss Me, Kate. Priscilla is back on the TheatreWorks stage for the fourth time in nine years. Last fall she appeared as Charlotte in A Little Night Music, as Mrs. Kendal in 2005’s The Elephant Man, and as the Teenage Greek Chorus in How I Learned to Drive in 2000.
A veteran of many area stages, she counts among her favorite musical credits Anna in The King and I, Lilli/Kate in Kiss Me, Kate, and the title role in Annie Get Your Gun. Her dramatic roles include Maria Callas in Master Class, Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst, Rosalind in As You Like It, and Kate in Dancing at Lughnasa. Beyond being a versatile actress, Priscilla has a voice of gold, a great sense of humor, and the incredible ability to balance her stage work with her husband and four great kids.
Since Priscilla has played this role before, we had to know what drew her back to it:
P.S. I welcome the challenge of playing the dual roles of Lilli, the spoiled, naughty star, and Kate, the unbridled shrew in the play-within-a-play, and finding the similarities and contrasts in each. The emotional layers, the defenses, the childishness, the devotion to the art – its great fun "divining the Diva."
You’ve performed in so many shows. What makes this production of Kiss Me, Kate unique?
P.S. It's the nice, triple-decker combination of comedy, music, and romance that makes the show special for me, plus the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast and artistic team. It's a great creative adventure and a hugely collaborative effort. What's not to like?
In your opinion, what will audiences love most about Kiss Me, Kate?
P.S. I think they'll enjoy all the elements that make this show a classic: a treasure chest of wonderful, variegated characters; a sophisticated, witty score; a clever book; the comic intricacies of the show-within-a-show motif; and of course, the thrills and sheer theatricality of all the backstage drama. But "classic" doesn't mean museum piece. I think older audience members will enjoy experiencing this favorite and familiar piece up close and freshly energized in TheatreWorks' intimate setting. Younger audience members seeing Kiss Me, Kate for the first time will delight in discovering just how entertaining a Cole Porter musical written in the late 1940s can be!
And thank goodness ALL audience members still have ONE MORE NIGHT to see Priscilla Squiers and this wonderful cast take to the stage ONE LAST TIME to put a smile on your face for an entire evening. See you at the Theatre!
