JOIN THE CAST ON STAGE IN THE "BEE"

by Christine Daley

I had never seen "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,"  so I didn't know what to expect when Beth asked me to "help out" on Monday night of the final week of rehearsal.  Suddenly, I was getting instructions and my name was called to come up on stage and sit on the bleachers!

Each night, four members of the audience will get the unique opportunity to join the cast on stage for a good portion of the show.  Not only that, they get to compete in the BEE!  Surprisingly, I did pretty well, spelling three words correctly,  but in the end, I got my juice box and they sent me on my way.

If you are interested in being part of the fun, make sure to let the box office staff know and you will be asked to fill out a survey prior to the show.  Your name will be called by a cast member if you are selected to be one of the four participants.  You get to stay on stage as long as you continue to spell the words correctly.  There are a few rules you must follow without exception.  One is to always, ALWAYS ask for a definition and for the word to be used in a sentence.  You'll be surprised by what they come up with. There are some other notes you will be given just before the show starts, but I can assure you, if you are brave enough, it will be a show that you will never forget!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW:
Catherine (Cat) Crocetto

Catherine is brand new to the TheatreWorks stage and is thrilled to have the opportunity to play the "ingénue," a new experience for her, having usually been cast as the comedienne or in a character role.  "I am an outgoing and outspoken person by nature, so acting as a shy 11 year old is definitely a challenge for me."

Cat had the unique opportunity to be an intern at opening night of the Broadway production and was amazed by the creativity and originality of the original cast.  "I am also completely enamored with William Finn's music and the way he tells a story; he is my absolute favorite composer of all time, and to perform his music is a dream! "

With the exception of her love for words and actually winning her second grade spelling bee, Cat says she is nothing like her character Olive, who is, among other things, very shy and neglected.   This has been a great challenge for her, and she owes a lot of her growth in this part to the director Beth, who helped her find the Olive inside herself.

When asked what she thought the audience would enjoy most about this show, Cat replied, "I honestly think people will enjoy the reality of this show.

Even though it is a bit extreme at times, isn't life? This show really lets you see the crazy inner thoughts of adolescents and their peers."  She also thinks the audience will LOVE Vicki Sosbe's character Logainne and her hilarious monologues."

Cat hails from Michigan where she studied Musical Theatre Performance at Western Michigan University and also taught voice and directed/choreographed theatre.  She has been in many shows but a few of her favorites are Madame Thernardier in Les Miserables and Mama Noah in Children of Eden.  What parts would she love to play in the future?  "I would say my top three are, Kate in Lippa's "The Wild Party", Lucile in "Parade", and Rona in "A New Brain."

Don't miss Cat as Olive, and the rest of the energetic cast of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!"
