What Is Truth? TheatreWorks New Milford Opens Tony Award-Winning Drama 'Doubt: A Parable' on July 10

NEW MILFORD, CONN. (June 29, 2009) – TheatreWorks New Milford is proud present the powerful, Tony Award- and Pulitzer Award-winning drama, DOUBT: A PARABLE, by John Patrick Shanley. The production opens July 10 for a four-week run.

Set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, DOUBT concerns Father Flynn (J. Scott Williams, Brookfield), an amiable new priest who believes the clergy should be thought of "as members of the family" to its congregation. His forward-thinking views immediately clash with those of Sister Aloysius (Noel Desiato, Sherman) – the authoritarian principal who favors discipline over compassion. The conflict mounts towards an explosive climax when Aloysius accuses Flynn of "interfering" with a student based on unproven evidence.

"The play isn’t just about religion, race, or sexism. DOUBT explores the very depths of human nature, the fine line that people walk between morality and ethics, and the motivating circumstances of each decision they make," said Director Alicia Dempster of Danbury. "[Playwright John Patrick] Shanley’s dialogue is superb, and he has constructed four very unique, yet familiar, characters. Fortunately, our production features four outstanding performers to fill those shoes and give us a recipe for a magnificent drama that no one should miss."

"Audiences will walk out of this show debating who is lying, who is telling the truth, and so much more," said the show’s Producer, Set Designer, and TheatreWorks President, Richard Pettibone of New Milford. "It moves swiftly, is thought-provoking, and has the ingredients of a thriller, a morality tale, a mystery, and like any good drama, even some comic moments."

DOUBT’s cast also features Stephanie Jackson (Farmington) as Mrs. Muller and Jessica Alex (Washington) as Sister James.

The production crew includes Technical Director, Scott Wyshynski (Washington); Lighting Designer, Brian Casel; and Costumer Designer, Joseph Russo (New Milford).

DOUBT debuted Off-Broadway at The Manhattan Theatre Club on November 23, 2004 and moved to The Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway on March 31, 2005. The show went on to win both the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play was also the basis for the 2008 Academy Award-nominated film with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

New York Newsday called the play "[The] #1 show of the year. In just ninety fast-moving minutes, Shanley creates four blazingly individual people. DOUBT is a lean, potent drama…passionate, exquisite, important, and engrossing."

DOUBT runs July 10,11 17,18 24,25,26 31 and August 1. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays, with a 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinee on July 26. Tickets for all shows are $20.00 for reserved seating.

On Thursday, July 9, senior citizens are invited to a free dress rehearsal at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 16 at 8:00 p.m. is TheatreWorks’ Pay-What-You-Want night. At this performance, you name the price for your ticket.

A Parody in a Pear Tree - TheatreWorks New Milford Opens the Outrageously Funny 'Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge' on December 5

For the holiday season, TheatreWorks New Milford is proud to announce the debut of Christopher Durang’s hilarious holiday parody of “A Christmas Carol,” MRS. BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE, on December 5, for a four-week run.

Durang, author of such cutting-edge comedies as "Beyond Therapy" and "Sister Mary Ignatius," focuses on one of Dickens’ most insignificant characters - poor Bob Cratchit’s wife. One day she flips, takes to drink, and tries to throw herself off a bridge, running headlong into the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, as well as the curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge. But this time around something is wrong with the Ghosts’ mystic powers, putting Scrooge and Mrs. Bob on a hilarious collision course with other Christmas classics such as "It’s a Wonderful Life," "The Gift of the Magi," and many more.

THEATREWORKS ANNOUNCES 2009 SEASON - Celebrating 42 years of live theatre in New Milford

Now that TheatreWorks New Milford has marked 2008 as its most highly-attended season in its 42-year-history, the theater has selected five main stage productions for its 2009 Season to build on its extraordinary success of 2008.

"Theatergoers of all kinds will be excited to know that affordable, Broadway-Caliber theater exists right here in New Milford, Connecticut," said TheatreWorks President, Richard Pettibone. "While the current economic environment remains precarious, it's a fact that our audience members can take in one of our highly polished shows - which includes classics like KISS ME, KATE to searing dramas like DOUBT - for about one-sixth of the cost it takes to see a show in New York, including parking and travel. Our upcoming season is simply a great alternative to get away from the everyday doldrums and enjoy a great night of live performance."

Send in the Sondheim TheatreWorks New Milford Opens Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-Winning Musical 'A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC'

NEW MILFORD, CONN. (September 16, 2008) - On September 26, TheatreWorks New Milford will open its production of the breathtakingly beautiful A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, with Music and Lyrics by Broadway icon Stephen Sondheim and Book by Hugh Wheeler. The show opens at 8 p.m. and runs for five weeks.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC deals with the universal subject of love in all its wondrous, humorous, and ironic forms. The play is set in turn-of-the-century Sweden and surrounds several couples in love and in lust with each other. The truth of their liaisons comes to a head when the lovers are ensconced together for a weekend at a country estate. Here, beneath the mysterious summer night, the characters’ passions and desires reach a heartfelt climax. Sondheim’s magnificent score features his most popular song, "Send in the Clowns."
