A High-Flying Farce TheatreWorks New Milford Premieres Tony Award-Winning Comedy ‘Boeing Boeing’ on December 6
NEW MILFORD, CONN. (November 22, 2013) – On Friday, December 6, TheatreWorks New Milford will premiere the hysterical comedic romp for the Holidays, BOEING BOEING by Marc Camoletti. The curtain goes up at 8:00 p.m. on a five-week run.
Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, BOEING BOEING is a hilarious, door-slamming farce. Bernard, an American architect living in 1960s Paris, successfully juggles three flight attendant fiancées: one American, one German, and one Italian. He tracks their schedules while his long-suffering housekeeper reluctantly plays romantic air controller as they fly in and out of his swank bachelor pad. But when his old college pal, Robert, visits unexpectedly, things turn a tad turbulent. Unfortunately for Bernard, a faster Boeing jet has been introduced. Schedules change, flights are delayed, and chaos ensues in this hysterical, high-flying fiancée fiasco.
“Three hundred years after Moliere made the French farce famous, author Marc Camoletti translated the art form using the idiom of the American screwball comedy: a stage full of doors, mistaken identities and a touch of sex combined with a non-stop pace that makes for an evening of sky-high hilarity,” said director and set and costume designer Joseph Russo of New Milford.
“It’s been seven years since TheatreWorks staged a farce, and I’m so happy, after all this time, that TheatreWorks is mounting one of the best of them all,” said TheatreWorks president Glenn R. Couture. “As of just a few years ago, BOEING BOEING was ranked as the most performed French play in the world. So there’s a method to our madness. Yes, it’s bedroom farce, but it’s not ‘dirty’ or ‘smutty’ in any regard. It’s just great fun…and a great opportunity to break away from the rush of the Holidays and, literally, laugh out loud over and over again.”
The cast features six of the area’s finest actors: Matt Austin and Jody Bayer (both Danbury) and Erin Shaughnessy, Reesa Roccapriore, Vicki Sosbe, and James Hipp (all New Milford).
Besides Russo, the show’s crew includes lighting design by Richard Pettibone and Scott Wyshynski, sound design by Tom Libonate, and stage management by Abby Hambidge.
BOEING BOEING made its premiere at the Théâtre de la Comédie-Caumartin in Paris on December 10, 1960. It reached London’s West End in 1962, where it ran for seven years. The play’s first Broadway debut occurred on February 2, 1965 at the Cort Theatre. It ran only 23 performances. On May 4, 2008, the play returned to Broadway, running at the Longacre Theatre for 279 performances and garnering two Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play. The New York Times said of the revival, “This latest edition of a play named for an aircraft soars right out of its time zone and into some unpolluted stratosphere of classic physical comedy.”
BOEING BOEING runs December 6,7 13,14,15 20,21 27,28 31 and Jan 3,4. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays, with a 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinee on December 15.
